Beauty in Shatters No. 2
My collection of broken crockery came in handy again. The aim of this series of mixed media project was to incorporate the things I found on the streets and the crockery I manage to broke at my kitchen into some wall-hangings.
The first object was made with to use of broken crockery tea mug and some things I found on the streets of Madrid and Zaragoza during my time in Spain with my brother's family. Pebbles from the bank of river Ebro from Zaragoza, lost earring and 20 cents coin found on the path in Retiro, chestnust from the old trees in the El Escorial, plastic floral found somewhere behind the Pilar. All these things are glued to the round canvas painted by the acrylic paints.
The second and third object are created from the old plastic bouquet I found about a year ago in front of the cemetery gate. The bouquet comprised of many plastic green foliage and two types of flowers - pink roses and white daisies. Yellow rose is also made from plastic and it is another jewel from the street. I found it on the parking lot in front of my local shop.
The both vases in which the newly created plastic bouquets sit are made from the shatters of the old bathrooom and kitchen tiles. The beige tiles I found again on the parking lot in my neighbourhood (there are two rows of garages and people get used to disguise their rubbish behind these structures - the shatters of the tiles were probably leftowers from one's bathroom reconstruction). The blue one are from the field road. It is a common practice here in the Middle Europe to use shatters of old tiles to strengten the structure of the field roads. I was drawn by their lively blue color and took a few pieces. There was a thick layer of cement glue on the backside of the blue tiles, so I tried to get rid of it carefully in case it was possible or chose the shatters with no cement glue on the back.
Both floral-wall hangings are made from canvases. The shatters are glued to the canvas by Chemopren type of glue (Pattex). When this part was done a took a thick needle, make a holes and put the stems of the flower through (the flowers were made from the pieces of plastic and each flower has its stem made from a thick piece of wire). Then I used a bit of hot-gun glue to secure each flower in its position.
I enjoyed the working of this three pieces. Currently I am much more comfortable with these type of art work than with oil or acrylic paintings, which is still big challenge for me. And as I have quite a few pieces of broken crockery left theres still some room for futhers experiments in this field.
